Octopus is on sale!

This is an old post and doesn't necessarily reflect my current thinking on a topic, and some links or images may not work. The text is preserved here for posterity.

In a small but important milestone in the life of my MicroISV, Octopus is finally available for purchase. The final price will be £699, but if you buy before November 1, 2011 (when Octopus 1 will ship (I hope!)), you'll save over 25%.

When designing the licensing scheme for Octopus, I considered a few options - charging per Tentacle, charging per project, charging per user, and combinations of the above. But I like simple systems, so I went with a simple licensing system: a free version, which has a max of one project, or the 'Enterprise' version which has no limitations at all. Simple.

Choosing a payment provider was also a difficult choice. Initially I wanted to control the experience, integrating with a nice company like BrainTree. Then I looked at what Ayende was doing with NHProf, using SWReg, which seemed much simpler. I'd be curious to hear any feedback you have on SWReg.

PS: If you'd like to learn a bit more about Octopus, check out the Hanselminutes episode!
